Knowledge - Know the world
Know the world
Our goal is to support children in the development of intellectual tools and learning strategies needed to acquire the knowledge that allows people to think productively. Knowledge is a familiarity, awareness, or understanding of someone or something, such as facts, information, descriptions, or skills, which is acquired through experience or education by perceiving, discovering, or learning. In our schools we do this in a range of different ways;
- declarative knowledge which is knowledge in an explicit form – this could be gained through learning basic facts through reading a non-fiction book
- implicit or tacit knowledge which is understanding through experience – this could be gained through the creation of a piece of artwork
- episodic knowledge which is memories, episodes, events, or narratives from the past – this could be gained through the recalling of a trip to a castle
- impressionistic knowledge which are feelings and impressions that influence action – this could be gained through tasting foods and deciding if you like it based on your reaction
- procedural, or skills knowledge which is knowing how things are done - this could be gained by following a set of instructions
- regulative knowledge which are principles and ideas that groups of people pursue in order to accomplish their work this could be gained through the embedding of a set of school or Trust values
