Course Description:
Are you looking for a rewarding career where you will be able to impact some of the most crucial years of a child's development? Our PGCE Primary (School based) programme is for you.
|
We develop excellent teachers who are resilient, critical, and reflective classroom practitioners. Trainees benefit from the university’s commitment to inclusivity, diversity and serving disadvantaged communities. The well-structured curriculums and placement-based training prepare trainees well to enter the world of teaching. (Ofsted 2023)
|
This school-based programme with QTS* aims to prepare beginning teachers to meet the Teachers’ Standards. Throughout the programme, beginning teachers will be challenged to achieve these standards to the highest level and we shall aspire to enable them to achieve outstanding levels of professional practice through both the taught curriculum and their placement practice.
|
Beginning teachers will follow one of two pathways: 3-7 years, covering Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 or 5–11 years, covering Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The age phase route they follow will determine the assessed placements undertaken.
|
*The curriculum is accredited and QTS recommended by The University of Greenwich. |
What will trainees do during their theoretical training?
Trainees will engage in a carefully sequenced programme of university-led training that integrates research-informed theory with practice. Across three Level 7 modules, they will explore key areas of primary education:
- Curriculum and Pedagogies – examining a range of approaches to teaching and learning, with a focus on adaptive practice and inclusive pedagogy.
- Progression and Assessment – developing understanding of subject progression, responsive teaching, and the effective use of assessment to support learning.
- Understanding Behaviour and Learning – exploring theories of behaviour and learning, including cognitive architecture, classroom management, and behaviour routines.
These modules are underpinned by Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP) opportunities where trainees apply theory to practice in focused areas such as adaptive teaching, responsive assessment, and behaviour for learning.
Alongside this, trainees complete three professional practice modules (school placements), where theoretical learning is applied, developed, and refined in classroom settings, guided by mentors and university tutors.
How will trainees be assessed?
Assessment is designed to ensure that trainees can critically apply theory to practice, demonstrate progression, and, at the end of the programme, meet the Teachers’ Standards:
- Curriculum and Pedagogies – assessed through a viva examination, requiring critical reflection on adaptive practice.
- Progression and Assessment – assessed through an essay exploring how teaching has been adapted to meet the needs of all children and evaluating subject progression.
- Understanding Behaviour and Learning – assessed through analysis and application of behaviour theory to classroom practice.
- Professional Practice 1 – assessed formatively against the five core areas of teaching (behaviour management, pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, and professional behaviours).
- Professional Practice 2 – assessed formatively against the same five core areas and summatively against the Teachers’ Standards.
- Professional Practice 3 – a summative assessment at the end of the programme, measured against the Teachers’ Standards to determine recommendation for QTS.
